In an ideal world, runners emerge from recovery weeks feeling energized and motivated for their next training cycle. We don’t live in ideal worlds, unfortunately. While resting our bodies sounds simple enough in theory, fully engaging with recovery week protocols can be difficult for some runners to manage. After disciplining ourselves to get out and hammer on a daily basis, it’s not so easy to cut ourselves some slack.
Recovery weeks require us to zoom out from the grind and reframe our training process. We’re not resting because we’re lazy. Rather, we’re recovering from the previous training stimulus, while allowing our bodies time to adapt and grow stronger. Which is pretty cool.
Plus, we don’t have to run as much during recovery weeks. Plus, plus: We’re probably about to run a whole lot more, so maybe take the PTO you’ve accrued and give yourself a well-deserved break. This is how my latest recovery week went down.
