For the last week of training before the taper for the Tamalpa Headlands 50K on Aug. 17, Avery’s plan included a mix of tempo (Zone 3) workouts, mega treadmill climbs, and big volume, culminating with a 22-miler on Sunday. Whew.

I’m fairly certain this is as fit as I’ve ever been heading into an ultra. I also feel as prepared as an East Coaster can feel heading into a West Coast race with huge amounts of climb. My prep work is thanks mainly to my dear friend and regular training partner, the treadmill. 

In this post, we’re going to break down our final machine-powered workouts of the training cycle featuring well over 6,000 feet of gain. See if you can guess the elevation profile on the Headlands course ...
