Before heading out for the final run of a mega 4-week volume build, I thought about the guidance Avery had written into my training plan: “You should go into this run with NOTHING to prove.”
Now there’s an interesting concept. Nothing to prove? Like, literally nothing?
Well, not exactly. I still had to run 16 miles in an extremely fatigued state under pretty dire circumstances including oppressive humidity, rain, and a blister on my toe the size of Worcester.
(That made me chuckle when it popped into my brain: A blistah tha size ah Woostah! Laughing in the face of adversity helped me not care as much about whatever horrible things were happening inside my shoe. It’s the little things that get you through the tough moments.)
Still, for all intents and purposes, there were no stakes for this run. No pace goals, no expectations, no Strava stats to worry about. Just get out there and get the damn thing done. Gotta say, having nothing to prove was pretty liberating.
