An interesting sensation gradually took over my body the other morning when I got out of bed: Nothing hurt. That usual ache deep in my bones? Nowhere to be found. That typical tightness emanating from my right glutes and radiating down to my calves? Not actually present for a change.

While there are a handful of components contributing to this lack of morning soreness, the biggest factor has been a weekly Pilates class. Every Thursday morning, our instructor (Jayne) leads us through a series of exercises that strengthen our glutes and engage our cores while building a foundation of body awareness that’s connected by our own simple breath.

For a 50-year-old endurance runner focusing on injury prevention, Pilates feels like a game-changer. This week for paid subscribers, we take a closer look at how (and why) to incorporate Pilates into your strength training routine.
