I’ve never realized how important it was to have a race on the horizon until now. I’ve actually had a slightly different issues, where I’m running more than previous February’s but still feeling aimless in my runs. I go out with no plan for distance, do whatever I feel like, and come home. And while those runs are great ways to sometimes shake up the monotony of a training plan, when they’re all you’re doing they’re torture.

Of all the things that left our lives during the pandemic, races are one I didn’t really think too much about. But my stack of medals and race bibs hasn’t been added to in way too long, and can’t wait until that changes.

Right there with you. I ran a lot in January and had little motivation in February. Weather played a part, no question. Hoping to get it back this month and you know, I'd kind of like a new race shirt.

I have a few races that got cancelled after I signed up, so I have a deferred entry waiting for me at some point. So I'm nervous about signing up for another one because I don't want to all the sudden have too many races on the calendar (imagine, what a nice problem to have). But entries for a bike race up Mt. Washington in July open in a few days, and I think I might pull the trigger and cross my fingers.

I'd really like to explore the White Mountains some day. It was on my list for 2020 before, you know.

wow paul... the phrase "make no plans beyond next week" hit me like a freight train.

i've been out of sorts this week, culminating with my cutting the run short, on a light day no less, because i just wasn't feeling it. i blamed it on the usual end-of-week/end-of-month work stress, but it feels like there is more to it than that... more people are thinking longer term now and planning things out farther ahead, while dealing with just as much uncertainty as we have been, if not more (let's not even go there about the vaccines...).

at least spring is coming! i'd take that over "winter is coming" any day.

It's a tough stretch. I know I've been struggling with it.

Just got to the newsletter after a busy weekend. For those like you Paul, who miss races for the competition with yourself: I've turned a good deal of my focus to FKTs. Whether it's trying to beat an established time, creating one of your own, or just finding a route that you can challenge yourself on. I think this time while races are still an uncertainty is perfect for FKTs. I'm not sure I'll ever go back. Never was really a race guy anyway.

Still not without its challenges. Finding structure is difficult. Just need to set a date and treat an attempt as you would a race day (telling this to myself more than anyone). Hope the warming temps are just what we need for motivation.

2.23 is my birthday. I don’t say that so people can give an obligatory “happy bday”. NO. I don’t care about my birthday, never have and I prefer when it doesn’t get acknowledged, but last year that changed. I will, for as long as so live, celebrate the life of Ahmaud Arbery on 2.23. I’ll celebrate his place is a runners world and his place in the entire world. 2.23 has more meaning than it ever has. We need to keep moving the needle on the record until everyone can play the same song.

Cheers to the end of February. The running has suffered, but I've done my best to compensate in other ways. My weight loss is (barely) back on track (down a solitary pound) and I managed it without the relentless tracking that was becoming almost as daunting as running during the recent spate of freezing temps and snowfalls. Trying to appreciate the little things. I've also started writing - no career changes looming, but every word I put on digital paper feels like blowing away a wisp of cobweb from the attic of my brain. It should keep me busy until legit Spring weather settles in. Also I managed two miles on the road today!

Have a great weekend, Probable Runners.

Love it Joe. Keep it up. You're on the right track. Little by little, piece by piece I can tell you're getting somewhere good.
