Very similar situation with myself recently, had Covid in late May. Was down for a few days with the fever/cough. Took about a week off during all of it and the first run back wasn't pleasant but I powered through. Took about week to feel normal running and maybe three weeks to get to where I was pre-covid.

I started noticing something was up when I had a much harder time with my usual 5k run. The day before I had done an 8k and sailed through it feeling great. Next day I had trouble getting up hills. Day after that I tested positive. For about four days I experienced symptoms from cough to nausea to just general fatigue. I didn't try running or even much of anything for about 10 days. After that I did a light 1 mile run and it absolutely obliterated me. I took a few more days off and then tried another slow run and made it to 5k and after that I just took it easy, slow pace, nothing to hard, and after about 3 weeks was back to where I was. I feel pretty lucky if I'm being honest.

I had a very similar experience, in that I was only down for a few days. My cough lingered a little longer, but it wasn't debilitating. The first run I went on, it was still cold (Houston cold) and I bundled up and took it super easy. I didn't cough once, and never felt out of breath or like my heart was pounding. I was so freaking relieved... because I know how terrible it's been for so many others.

I hope that you continue to stay on the mend. My husband and I have been like you, careful, vaxxed and boosted. We had three trips planned for earlier this year that we tentatively went into and two races. One of which was part of one of the trips. We managed to escape the first two, which involved travel and being in large groups of people. The third trip was for my brother's surprise 50th birthday where he lives in Chicago. We managed to make it through the first two unscathed, testing and paying close attention to what we were doing and how we were interacting with people. We did not, however, make it to my brother's birthday. My husband and his father work the finish line of the Boston Marathon every year, and wouldn't you know it, that's where he ended up getting it, or at least we think it is. It's the only place that timing works out with.

He was sick for about 4 days, mostly flulike symptoms (fever, aches and some cough) and then bounced back pretty well. I got it from him and I was down for about 9 days. Body aches, fever, and really bad chest congestion. Some days I would wake up feeling like my throat was going to stick together and close on me. This did wonders for my anxiety, as you can imagine. This was late April-early May. Since then I'll often go on a run and feel like I'm laboring or breathing is more difficult than it should be. I think I've had one run since that felt good. Hopefully, this will pass too with time but it's been pretty shitty to be honest.

I've managed to avoid COVID thus far, at least symptomatic COVID as far as I know. I had a sore throat after a conference, but had numerous negative tests.

Now that I'm into my training period, this is one of my biggest fears. I'm vax'd and boosted so I'm not worried about the general effects of it, but how it would potentially set back training if I did catch it. Everybody's response is different, but this thread and the comments are helpful for expectations. I assume at some point I'll get it in spite of being careful, but have been pushing back on keeping it from giving me anxiety.

Thanks for this post! I started getting symptoms on 6/23 and, after 4.5 days of pretty bad fever, aches, sore throat and terrible fatigue, I'm just starting to feel better. that said, my heart rate has been elevated (resting around 55-60 became 90 or 80). It's only now started to come back toward 60. I also started feeling off during a long run that normally would have been easy.

Curious to hear how long others have taken off, or any strategies to ensure over-exertion.
